He enlisted in the Bavarian army and saw service at Ypres, the Somme, Arras and Passchendaele. His indifferent watercolours failed to impress and he was twice rejected by the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts and struggled to make ends meet.
At the age of 18, Hitler moved to Vienna with the aim of becoming one of the city’s great artists.
